ideabox was a tiny Sinatra + DataMapper app — “version 0.2 :/” from the very first commit — where I threw ideas before they could evaporate. Each one got a title, a markdown body, and a karma score I could upvote; some were flagged highdeas (the had-a-great-idea-while-elevated kind, retired from the code in 2018). Fourteen survived. A few even became real. What follows is the whole run, woven together: the ideas, the commits that held them, which ones I actually built — and a little of what else was going on.

virtual host Source dedicated servers ▲ 1

implement something similar to vhosts in apache for Source servers so that operators can run servers on different ports but only require that people know a particular hostname to connect.

maybe we could have something that listens on 27015 and dispatches to the correct server based on the requested hostname. thought this could be tricky if source traffic doesn't have the hostname information in it when clients try to connect. HTTP has the "Host:" header in all requests so they have it a little bit easier.

Hah! That's not a bad idea actually. Maybe extend it a bit so that it will only show you X# of posts until an item is checked off the todo. Get them all checked off and you can see everything on the front page again?

Some chat protocol that doesn't use fucking XML ▲ 3

Really, I want something that gracefully handles embedded stuff like images, isn't massive and nonsensical like XMPP, can be implemented easy, and use web technologies in the client for ease of use and open access.

MessagePack might be fun for serialization on the wire. Maybe use WebSockets?
